The National historical museum in Sofia, Bulgaria is one of the largest historical museums in South-Eastern Europe and on the Balkan peninsula. It keeps several hundred thousand of monuments and it's a great place to spend a few hours and see some of the most valuable objects of the Bulgarian heritage and know more about the history and culture of the country.
The museum is located in one of the former government residences in the Boyana district in Sofia, it's right on the Sofia's ring road is easy accessibly by car. No direct bus or public transport is going there, so if not by car the best way to go is by catching a taxi.
The main exhibition of the museum is located in five halls: Prehistory, Ancient Thrace, Middle Ages - First (VII-XI century) and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (XII - XIV century), the Bulgarian lands in XV-XIX c. And Third Bulgarian State (1878 - until today). In the collection dedicated to prehistory (III - II millennium BC.) you could see various bones and tools, ornaments and ceramics from that age.
In another room are unique treasures from Thracian times. The museum preserves and shows the famous worldwide Panagyurishte, Rogozen and Letnitza treasures. You can see here also many burial gifts and ornaments discovered during the excavation of graves throughout the country. The museum has a also wonderful park facing the Vitosha Mountain, where you can sit and relax after the visit.
